Grading on Definition of Marriage and Stance against LGBTQ+ Ideology

We urge all political parties in Singapore to be transparent about your respective visions for our country, particularly regarding your definitions of marriage and gender. Transparency on these issues is crucial as it enables voters to make informed decisions, fostering a healthy democracy. Clear positions ensure consistent and coherent policy-making, impacting areas such as education, housing, national service and media. Well-defined policies on sensitive issues promote social cohesion by managing diverse viewpoints and respecting the various cultural and religious beliefs within our society.

People's Action Party

"The government will continue to uphold our family-centred policies. We are fully committed to that, and we will continue to uphold marriage as defined as between men and women." ~ Lawrence Wong, 2022

"If the PAP were to win the next general election, likewise we will not change the laws and policies that rely on this definition of marriage. and that relates to how public housing, adoption, how we what we teach our children in schools, advertising standards, film classification and so on. basically the overall tone of our society will not change. Our laws and policies will remain the same." ~ Lawrence Wong, 2022

* PSG appreciates the PAP's commitment to upholding the traditional definition of marriage as between a man and a woman in its policies. However, PSG advocates for the explicit enshrinement of heterosexual marriage as a fundamental liberty in our Constitution. PSG is concerned about PAP MPs attending Pinkdot in their personal capacities given that it is a political protest.

Progress Singapore Party

"Eventually, recognising that 377A is unenforceable, some members were prepared to put aside their personal opinions and not pursue their objection to the repeal of 377A. With their compromise, PSP is now able to come to a party position of supporting the repeal of 377A." ~ Hazel Poa, 2022

"PSP's position is that the definition of marriage should be decided via a national referendum rather than by Parliament. This will allow the many Singaporeans who have expressed concerns to have a say in this matter." ~ Hazel Poa, 2022

* PSG is disappointed with PSP's preference for deciding the definition of marriage via a national referendum rather than supporting a constitutional amendment to safeguard traditional marriage from legal challenges. PSG seeks transparency and clarity regarding PSP’s stance on the definition of marriage, particularly if its policies upholds the traditional view of marriage as between a man and a woman. It is also noted that PSP has several representatives attending and supporting Pinkdot.

D

Singapore Democratic Party

"You know, I think this is something that the people will have to answer. Right now, I'll be very honest with you, it's still a very divisive situation. The time when the society is ready is, I think, for Singaporeans to answer at some point, you know, people will have to decide." ~ Chee Soon Juan, 2020

* PSG seeks transparency and clarity regarding the Singapore Democratic Party's stance on the definition of marriage. PSG is concerned about Dr. Chee Soon Juan, Secretary-General of SDP, participating in events hosted by Singapore's LGBT advocacy group, People Like Us (PLU), where he had voiced support for LGBT rights. Additionally, Dr. Chee has attended Pinkdot with his wife and children, raising questions about SDP's position on traditional marriage and related policies.

C

Workers' Party

"Not lifting the whip would deny Workers' Party MPs not in favour of a repeal of 377A the opportunity to vote freely and in doing so, to also represent Singaporeans who see this issue as a matter of deep religious belief and conscience." ~ Pritam Singh, 2022

https://sprs.parl.gov.sg/search/#/sprs3topic?reportid=bill-605

"The Workers’ Party will not participate in the culture war over LGBT issues because this is prejudicial to the common good of our society." ~ Gerald Giam, 2022

* PSG seeks transparency and clarity regarding the Workers' Party's stance on the definition of marriage and all other related policies. Specifically, PSG wants to understand if WP's policies will uphold the traditional definition of marriage as between a man and a woman. It is noteworthy that WP's central executive committee members attended in as party representatives and openly supports Pinkdot.
